Missouri First Steps Program

First Steps is Missouri’s Early Intervention system that provides services to families with children, birth to three years of age, with disabilities or developmental delays. The program is designed to meet the needs of families related to enhancing their child’s development, learning, and participation in family and community life.

Missouri ARC

Since 1950 people with disabilities and their families have been placing their trust with the St. Louis Arc. Today, the St. Louis Arc serves more than 4,000 children, teens, and adults with autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, intellectual and other developmental disabilities. The Arc provides Support groups, workshops, social and recreation programs, employment and training services as well as residential and adult day programs to stay engaged with ones surrounding community.

Department of Elementary and Secondary Education

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is the administrative arm of the State Board of Education. It is primarily a service agency that works with educators, legislators, government agencies, community leaders and citizens to maintain a strong public education system.

Department of Mental Health

DMH serves approximately 170,000 Missourians annually through state-operated facilities and contracts with private organizations and individuals. The seven state-operated psychiatric facilities include inpatient psychiatric care for adults and children,

as well as sex offender rehabilitation and treatment services. In addition, five habilitation centers and 6 regional offices serve individuals with developmental disabilities. Other services are purchased from a variety of privately operated programs statewide through approximately 1,300 contracts managed annually by DMH.

Peter Wright is a Special Education Attorney who overcame his own disabilities teaching himself ways to be successful. He teaches and advises parents on how to know the laws and advocate for them.
